Customer insight is like a narcotic. Once you've had a taste, you want more... and more, and more! Fortunately, this can be a healthy addiction: usually, what's difficult is finding the time and resources to generate this steady supply of insight. In response, we combined activities from usability and participatory design to create a technique called a "Design Checkpoint". Design Checkpoints can occur every one or two weeks throughout a project, so they're perfectly suited for teams who like to iterate their designs often — even more so than "geurilla" usability tests. Also unlike traditional usability, it's okay for designers themselves to conduct the exercise: in fact, it's encouraged! In this workshop, you'll learn how to plan Design Checkpoints, what to expect from them, and will have an opportunity to conduct at least one yourself.
