There are two major definitions on the usability: one is the small-usability by Nielsen and another is the big-usability by ISO9241-11. Gradually, the latter has been accepted worldwide and now could be regarded as the world standard. But I pointed out an inadequacy in the latter, that is, the satisfaction is regarded as a component of usability. Instead, I¡¯m proposing a new definition of usability as just consists of the effectiveness and the efficiency. I¡¯m putting the satisfaction out from the components of the usability and put it as the core-characteristics of the user experience (UX). It is because the fact that the user experience is the ultimate goal for stakeholders in manufacturing industry and service providing companies.
But there are rather big differences among industry in terms of the development of HCD, human centered design of artifacts and their use. Since the advent of ISO13407 in 1999, some companies have devoted much effort for establishing a better organizational system for the HCD, but some are not. I differentiated the status of companies into 8 levels: 0 is the innocence, 1 is the criticism, 2 is the evaluation-centered, 3 is the horizontal-expansion, 4 is the inclusion of upper process, 5 is the consistency among whole processes, 6 is the top down process management, and 7 is HCD as the organizational culture.
Based on this consideration, I expect that the manufacturing and service-providing activity of industry to be better based on the consciousness of their current status.
