Bill Moggridge

Bill Moggridge is a cofounder of IDEO, a global design consultancy, creating impact through design. A Royal Designer for Industry, Bill designed the world´s first laptop computer. He pioneered interaction design and is one of the first people to integrate human factors into the design of software and hardware.  He has been a trustee of the Design Museum; Visiting Professor in Interaction Design at the Royal College of Art in London, Lecturer in Design at the London Business School and a member of the Steering Committee for the Interaction Design Institute in Ivrea, Italy.   He is currently Consulting Associate Professor in the design program at Stanford University.  He served as Congress Chair for CONNECTING’07, the Icsid/IDSA World Design Congress held in San Francisco in October 2007.

His book, DVD and website Designing Interactions (www.designinginteractions.com) tells the story of how interaction design is transforming our daily lives; it is available from The MIT Press. He is currently working on another book, Designing Media, which examines the connections between traditional mainstream media and the emerging digital realm.

1971 Set up model making and prototyping team
1972 Design of mini computer for Computer Technology Limited
1973 Space heater for Hoover featured on front cover of Design Magazine
1974 Appointed advisor to the British government about design education

1975 Added Mechanical Engineering / Data Entry workstation for ITT in Spain
1976 Retained by ITT for the design of telephones in Europe, working in 10 countries
1977 Appointed ID course assessor by the Council of National Academic Awards
1978 Served as Honorary secretary of CSD (Chartered Society of Designers)
1979 Opened second office in San Francisco

1980 Designed GRiD Compass computer, the first laptop, winner of several awards
1981 Installed first CAD workstation for engineering design
1982 Appointed lecturer for Stanford product design program
1983 Designed Laser System (IDEA award) and telephones (ID award)
1984 Designed Word processor, Computer System, and Printer, all winning ID awards

1985 Developed Innovation Strategy process with Xerox program
1986 Started Interaction Design for the design of software
1987 Added Human Factors professionals to the team
1988  Appointed Royal Designer for Industry (RDI)
1989 Developed process for Innovation with NEC in Japan

1990 Appointed trustee of the Design Museum, London
1991  Formed IDEO, joining with David Kelley Design and Matrix
